Thermometers for Motorcycles

The instrument above includes a clock, voltmeter, and remote thermometer and is sold by California Sport Touring. It runs off the motorcycle's power and is backlit. Downsides are that it is not waterproof (needs to be covered in the rain), and it is 5½ inches wide.

The thermometers below are all discontinued. It's had to keep up with this market!

A Radio Shack Indoor/Outdoor Car Thermometer, now discontinued, (stock no. 63-1039, about $15) had some nice features for motorcyclists. You can set it to show outdoor temperature and voltage continuously, or a number of other pairs including indoor and/or outdoor temperature, clock, and/or voltage. Perhaps best of all, it has a backlight that can be on continuously for viewing at night. These are all excellent positives. The downside? At 5 inches, it was pretty wide. And, of course, it is no longer available. Nevertheless as you can see in the photo above, it fits easily on my R1150RT's RCU shelf alongside the Valentine 1 radar locator.

The photograph above shows an Airguide Model 3005 in/out thermometer mounted on a BMW R1150RT. This thermometer shows the current temperature and records the highest and lowest temperatures noted since its memory was last cleared. Apparently, it is no longer available. Click here to see the closest Airguide I have found:

Discontinued Radio Shack Thermometer #63-1019

The photograph above shows a Radio Shack R/V thermometer mounted on a BMW R1150RT. Like the Airguide, it uses a remote sensor to display the temperature reading in either °Fahrenheit or °Celsius (e. g., centigrade) of the air flowing over and through the motorcycle as you ride. Unless the engine is cold, the reading at rest is not accurate. It is not waterproof, so the LCD readout (not the sensor) should be covered with a plastic baggie when it rains. If you get it wet, as I have many times, remove the battery and let it dry out; it will then work fine again.

The thermometer shown above (#63-1019) is no longer in production. It has been replaced with the slightly larger thermometer below, left, shown mounted on a K1200LT, which is Radio Shack product no. 63-1023 ($19.95 list price). This thermometer displays both "inside" and "outside" temperatures at all times. I prefer the original thermometer because it is smaller, but the #63-1023 does the same job.

Current Radio Shack R/V Thermometer #63-1023

The photo above, right, shows a thermometer/clock John Outlan, of Orlando, Florida, found among automotive supplies at a Target. It is sold for $9.99 plus tax. You do not need to use the clock because you can set this unit always to display outside temperature.

Most likely there are a lot of other units "out there" in the marketplace. Auto parts stores would be a good place to check.
