Extended Front Fenders

by Jeff Dean

For extending the rear section of the front fender on an R1150RT or R1100RT, I am going to give you the best solution first. Purchase the rear front fender for a K1200LT (BMW part no. 146612307911, $65.00 retail), modify it slightly, and install it on your RT. All the bolt holes line up perfectly, and a little trimming of the LT fender is needed. The photos below show the work needed and the result.

The photo above shows the LT fender installed on an R1150RT-P. If fits perfectly using the LT's original bolt holes.

The photo below left compares the top of the LT fender on the bottom with the the old RT fender on the top prior to trimming. The photo below right shows the LT fender after trimming to match approximately the RT fender. This was all that was needed to obtain a perfect fit on the RT.

Some other solutions available are shown below.

These photographs above show, left, Scooterville's aftermarket extended front fender—covered, appropriately, with mud—on a BMW R1100RT. It also works fine on the R1150RT. It is no longer producted. On the right is the Wunderlich fender extension available from BMW of Santa Cruz for $39.95 plus shipping.

Adventure Motorcycle Gear offers another “Fenda Extenda” for numerous BMW models for $29.95 plus shipping. It is shown on the left below. On the right below is a carbon fiber front mudgard that used to be available from Sprint Manufacturing in the U.K., that has had very good reviews. Though carbon fiber is no longer available, Sprint makes it in fiberglass now.

The photo of the Sprint product, below right, is by Martin Ebdon. Click on the photo to visit his website.
